Year 5 - Gravity vs Mass

Today, Year 5 conducted an experiment to explore the relationship between mass and gravity. The children carefully measured and recorded the weights of five different balls before dropping them from the same height. To their surprise, they discovered that gravity is a constant force, meaning that all the balls fell at the same speed, regardless of their weight. We then discussed the role of air resistance and how it affects falling objects. The children were fascinated to learn that if air resistance were removed—such as in a vacuum—a bowling ball and a feather would fall at exactly the same speed. This led to a great discussion about real-life examples, including astronauts on the Moon, where there is no air to slow objects down.

Foodie Friends club- Valentine Biscuits

Our talented bakers created delightful Valentine’s biscuits in various heart-shaped sizes for our final Foodie Friends Club today. Most children have enjoyed it so much that they’ve been recreating the easy bakes at home for their families.

Year 3- Maths- Flexible Partitioning using base 10.

Year 3 have been working extremely hard to divide a 2-digit number by a 1-digit one, focusing on flexible partitioning. They've been using base 10 to help understand concepts like exchanging 10s for ones to simplify the division process. This approach allows them to break down numbers more easily and gain a deeper understanding of the division process.

Year 2 - Counting pounds and pence

This week in Maths we have been practising counting pounds and pence. On Monday, we counted just pence and Tuesday just pounds. Today we counted both together. This relied on our 2, 5 and 10 times tables being well learnt. It needed a little practice to transfer our knowledge of counting into the coins. We compared them to base 10 in order to see that a 50p coin has 5 tens in it. This helped us to notice all of the tens and ones we needed to count. After we had been successful, we removed the base 10 and the coins were less abstract allowing us to count with more confidence.
