Year 6 - Numeracy Day
As part of National Numeracy Day, our Year 6 children took part in an exciting oracy-based maths activity using a concept cartoon linked to real-world numeracy challenges. Working collaboratively, the children discussed and solved a variety of problems linked to important global themes including tree planting, clean energy, water conservation, recycling and reducing carbon footprints. The tasks encouraged pupils to apply their knowledge of percentages, ratio, area, multiplication and reasoning in meaningful contexts. Throughout the activity, the children explained their ideas, justified their methods and listened respectfully to the opinions of others, developing both their mathematical understanding and their speaking and listening skills. The concept cartoon showed the children that there can be more than one way to solve a problem and encouraged deeper mathematical thinking. It was fantastic to see the children demonstrating resilience, teamwork and confidence while recognising how maths can help make a positive difference in the wider world.
Year 4 - National Numeracy Day
To celebrate National Numeracy Day, the Year 4 class took part in a number of activities to develop their reasoning and problem-solving skills. These included taking part in a live lesson delivered by TT Rockstars and Mr MoneyJar, which involved understanding the value of money and playing ‘Would You Rather…?’ to decide when to splurge and when to save. The children also completed the Build A Playground challenge, in which they had to compare deals on various pieces of playground equipment in order to build the most cost effective playground. Once they had calculated their total cost, the children designed their playgrounds. The children’s final challenge involved a concept cartoon about number sequences. They were given the first 5 terms in a sequence and were asked to workout the 20th and the 100th terms with their partner. This activity involved lots of discussion using our oracy skills. They were encouraged to share their ideas and ask each other questions so that they would both reach a mutual decision in order to reach the answers. The class was given timely clues, or helpful hints, to aid their mathematical working. They showed great perseverance and even developed an algebraic equation to help solve the problems efficiently.
Year 5 - Money Matters
Debt Aware: Money Matters visited Year 5 today to talk about banking, including the names of high street banks and building societies as well as their role in providing loans and deposit accounts. The children learned about the growth of online banking and the decline of cash as a payment method. Different types of saving accounts were discussed as well as the role of interest.
Year 1 Maths: Making Equal Groups
Today we looked at creating equal groups using our times tables to help us. For example, sorting 30 pom-poms into equal groups of 10s, 5s or 2s. This helped us to understand multiplication in a practical way as we can see how many lots of groups will make a number. For example, 30 is 3 groups of 10.
Year 1 Maths: Measuring Capacity
Year 1 enjoyed using concrete resources to measure the capacity of different containers. They really enjoyed using cups of water to measure the capacity of a jug. It was impressive to see the children ensuring that they filled the cup to the same place every time to create an equal measurement.
Times Table Rockstar Champions
A huge well done to our Times table Rockstar champions, who battled it out to take first place in their classes! An incredible 121 children took part, achieving a fantastic total of over 181,000 correct answers, a truly brilliant effort by everyone involved. A special congratulations goes to our winners: Piper-Jo – Year 3 Lottie – Year 4 Charlie – Year 5 Charlie – Year 6 What an amazing achievement, we are so proud of you all!
Reception: Spring Flower Hunt
What a blooming wonderful morning! Our Reception class turned into a team of mini-botanists this morning as they headed out on an exciting spring flower hunt. The children’s eyes lit up as they spotted a vibrant carpet of bluebells and the delicate, tiny petals of forget-me-nots peeking through the grass. We practised our counting while admiring rows of cheerful tulips and bright yellow daffodils, before moving on to marvel at the larger-than-life rhododendrons. The highlight for many was seeing the spectacular, cup-shaped blooms of the magnolia soulangeana, which looked almost like pink and white clouds against the sky. We finished our adventure by identifying the hardy geraniums tucked away in the flower beds. It was a fantastic way to enjoy the fresh air, learn about the change in seasons, and appreciate the incredible colours of nature right on our doorstep!
Year 1 Maths: Heavier or Lighter
Year 1 have started to explore mass of objects. They used the words heavier and lighter to compare objects. They compared lots of classroom objects as a team. The children could see that the heavier object went down in the scale and the lighter object went up.
Year 4 - Outdoor Maths
This morning Year 4 have fully embraced this lovely sunshine and completed our ordering decimals lesson outside. We decided if decimals were in the correct order using ascending and descending variations. The children then used the place value counters to create their own examples for their talk partner to complete.
Year 1 Maths: Measuring with Objects
Year 1 used objects such as cubes, paper clips, dominoes and counters to measure different classroom objects. The children had to make sure that the objects were aligned and they did not leave any spaces between the objects that they were using to measure. The children measured glue sticks, pencils, rubbers, whiteboards etc.
Year 3- Maths- Exploring Mass and Scales
Building on what the children learned in Year 2, we have started our unit on Scales and Mass this week. While the children already know about grams and kilograms, they are now looking closer at how to read different types of scales accurately. We have also been practicing how to convert between units, remembering that 1 kg = 1000 g. We talked about how we still see these scales today, like when weighing fruit and vegetables at the supermarket. This week’s learning is helping the children become much more confident at weighing objects and comparing masses on their own.
Reception Maths - Odd and Even
This week in Maths we have been introducing odd and even numbers. We looked at the numberblocks, splitting them into two groups of ‘odd blocks’ and ‘even tops’ - we looked carefully at the shape of the number blocks to help us to identify if they were odd or even, noticing the doubles that could be seen in the even tops.
