Year 1 Maths: sorting 3D shapes
Year 1 have been working really hard to sort 3D shapes. They have been sorting groups into colour, shape and properties such as curved or straight edges, the amount of faces the shapes have and the number of vertices they have. The children had to look really closely at the shapes to understand their similarities and differences.
Year 3-Oral Health & Physical Activity
Today, Nathan delivered the second GULP (Give up loving pop) session, focusing on the importance of oral hygiene and making healthy drink choices. The session was split into active and classroom-based learning: Physical Activity: The children participated in 30 minutes of high-energy exercise, playing a game where they had to "run away from plaque" and earn points for "cleaning" their teeth. Classroom Learning: We explored the impact of sugary drinks on health and discussed practical ways to avoid them. To see the effects of sugar and acid firsthand, the children carried out an egg experiment, which provided a great visual representation of how tooth enamel can be damaged. Practical Skills: Every child received a toothbrush and toothpaste to encourage consistent dental care at home. The children were fully engaged and absolutely loved the session.
Year 1 Maths - Identifying 3D Shapes
In our maths session this morning we were looking at recognising and naming 3D shapes. The children first learnt a new song which focused on cylinders ,cones, cube and sphere which they absolutely loved! Next we used the 3D shapes to work on identifying how many vertices, faces and edges each of the shapes had. The children worked extremely hard to develop their understanding especially with the sphere and cylinders which were super tricky!
Reception Maths - Subitising Pairs
This week in Maths, we have been revisiting our subitising skills to 5. We have moved onto looking at different frames and arrangements to help us subitise quickly, e.g. fingers on our hand, spots on a dice and numicon pieces. The children then took turns to play a game of 'pairs' where they had to turn over different cards to see if they could subitise and find a matching pair. They were brilliant at spotting the equal amounts!
Year 2 - Maths - Creating 3D shapes and identifying the number of vertices
In Year 2 we have been identifying the properties of 3D shapes. We constructed 3D shapes using sticks and playdough and counted the number of vertices.
Year 6 - Dividing Fractions
Today, Year 6 focused on applying their understanding of dividing fractions by whole numbers. The children revisited the method of placing the whole number as a fraction and using the inverse operation (multiplying by the reciprocal) to calculate the answer. They then applied this strategy to a range of increasingly challenging questions, before using their knowledge in problem-solving and reasoning tasks. This helped deepen their understanding and ensured they could explain their thinking using accurate mathematical language.
Year 6 - LBQ - Adding Mixed Number Fractions
Year 6 spent today’s lesson developing their understanding of adding mixed-number fractions using LBQ. The children engaged with a sequence of challenging questions that reinforced core concepts including converting mixed numbers, finding equivalent fractions and simplifying. The digital platform allowed for immediate feedback, supporting pupils’ progress and addressing misconceptions in real time.
Reception Maths - Numberblock Stampolines
This week, Reception have been further developing their understanding on composition of numbers 1-5. We used the Numberblocks as reference to print patterns equal to their amounts and looked at the parts we could see. We also thought about how each Numberblock can create different shapes, but still remains the same amount as before. The children then used an interactive grid on the large screen to explore these shapes and patterns.
Year 4 Maths LBQ
Today we had a visit from Mr Bloomfield who taught us various ways to multiply and divide by 9 using LBQ. The children loved learning the most common tricks of how to understand and find the next multiple of 9.
Year 3- Maths- Making arrays using counters
In Maths, we have started our Multiplication unit. Today, the children were fantastic mathematicians, demonstrating their understanding of arrays by working in pairs and using counters.
Year 1 Maths: subtraction using play dough
Year 1 had so much fun in maths today using play dough to help them with subtraction. For example, for 8-2=6, they had to roll 8 balls of play dough as this is the whole, then squash 2 (a part) to find out how many were left over (6 as a part). They found this helpful as they could physically change the play dough and use it as a visual. Well done Year 1!
Year 3- TT Rockstars: The Battle is ON!
This week, we've kicked off the TT Rockstars Battle of the Bands, where our year groups go head-to-head to see who can answer the most correct times tables questions. We are dedicating 15 minutes each day over three days to this tournament during class time. The rivalry is fantastic! Currently, Year 6 is leading the charge on the leaderboard, but Year 3 is incredibly competitive, they are going home and logging extra time on TT Rockstars, determined to practice their way right into the Top Ten!
