Little Leaders

Fostering leadership qualities in children from a young age can have numerous benefits, including enhanced confidence, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively in teams. At St Barnabas we provide a number of opportunities for our children to lead which helps them develop crucial leadership skills like communication, decision-making, and teamwork.

Heads and Deputies

At the end of Year 5 children write and present to their class why they would make a wonderful Head or Deputy Head boy or girl. The whole class and staff across school vote for who they think would make the best Heads and Deputies.

Our Heads and Deputies help to organise events and worships, lead fundraising campaigns, set an example to the younger children and show visitors around our school. They are also responsible for counting up the Values points in each class and they present the scores in our weekly Celebration Worship.

Sports Leaders

Our Sports Leaders also have to write and present their case for why they would make a fantastic sports leader. The children and staff then vote and Mrs Gardner, our PE subject leader holds meetings with them each week. Our Sports Leaders plan and lead inter-house sports competitions each half term, they accompany the younger children to events, represent our school at sports events, lead sports activities at lunch times and organise the sports equipment.

Wellbeing Warriors

Our Wellbeing Warriors support our PSHE leader, Mrs Gardner with PSHE campaigns and projects. This year they are encouraging our whole school family to walk to school or park and stride each day through the WOW initiative in order to increase physical activity. They present the awards in our Celebration Worship and lead competitions and events. They also help to ensure that our children make healthy choices with their break time snacks.

11th October 2024

In our Wellbeing Warrior meeting today, the children discussed what should and what shouldn’t be included in our break time snacks as we have had quite a few questions about this from both parents and children.
After looking at national  guidance and a healthy balanced diet, the wellbeing warriors have decided that the following foods can be brought in for a break time snack:
Fruit - fresh/dry
Vegetables
Frubes ( tube yoghurt)
Cheese ( babybel or similar)
Plain /yoghurt covered rice cakes
Breadsticks
Crackers/cracker bread
Items that we would like children NOT to bring in:
Any chocolate coated items
Cereal bars
Nuts

Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive a free piece of fruit each day. Thank you for your support and understanding.
This will begin on our return after half term. If there are any medical conditions that require other items, class teachers and staff will use their discretion.

Worship Our Way (WOW) Group

Mrs Araujo, our RE leader, leads our WOW group which is made up of children who are passionate about improving Worship and involving all of our children and community in prayer and spiritual activities. This year they are hoping to continue to plan and lead collective worship. WOW group have also taken the lead in organising and distributing resources to each class each week for the Year of Prayer focus that we are taking part in across our Diocese both in our classes and in whole school worships each week. Please click here to learn more about the Year of Prayer throughout our school and here for more information about our WOW group.

Smart School Council

Our School council aims to involve every child, as we believe every child's voice is important.
It is led by our pupils and is inclusive of everyone in our school family.
We have a Communication Team made up of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils who help to run our Smart School Council.
We host Whole School Class Meetings every fortnight  in all of our classes to discuss important questions that will drive change within our school and our community. The Communication Team then comes together to look at the results and discuss what steps we can take as a school and what we can put into action. Rotakids

RotaKids is a fun and exciting way for our Year 5 children get involved with important activities in the community, all while having a great time in the process. RotaKids gain a valuable experience in helping others and learning interesting, new things.By doing so, children enjoy a boost to their confidence and self-esteem at a key age and develop and understanding of how their actions can impact on others and how we can help to make a difference to our school, community and globally.

Librarians

Our librarians support Miss Flynn, our Literacy leader to promote a love of reading across our school. They help to organise events such as World Book Day, order new exciting books for our library and plan and lead story and craft clubs.

Peer Mediators

Year 5  participated in their first Peer Mediation session in association with DACA and Ben from Quakers in Britain. Peer mediation empowers children to resolve conflicts peacefully and build important communication and problem-solving skills. The children are looking forward to their next two sessions and will then have the opportunity to apply to become a St Barnabas peer mediator. Our staff also had training on peer mediation yesterday too and are looking forward to seeing conflicts being resolved between the children and peer mediators.
