Reception Maths - Number Track games

This week, Reception have been revisiting the order of numbers 1-10 and discussing how we know the position of each number. We said that each number increases by one more each time and we can use this to find any numbers which are missing. The children then took part in number track games with a partner where they had to roll the dice and move their counter the equal amount along the number track.

Year 6 Debt Aware Money Skills Session

Year 6 completed module 6 of Money Matters, this week. This was all based around enterprise - a project or activity which is difficult, complicated or potentially risky. The children learned that an enterprising person is independent, positive, hard-working and resilient and looked at some famous examples. They also discussed what is involved in setting up your own business.

Year 5 - Money Matters

On Wednesday, Year 5 took part in their final session of the Money Matters programme, bringing to a close a fantastic series of lessons focused on financial education. The children have developed their understanding of key money concepts and today they explored the roles of banks, the importance of saving and how to make informed choices when spending. Through interactive discussions and real-life scenarios, the children reflected on how money is used in everyday life and why budgeting is a valuable life skill.

Year 3- Maths-Understanding Money: Pounds and Pence

This week in maths, the children have been consolidating their understanding of notes and coins. They’ve focused on converting single amounts of pence into pounds and pence, becoming more confident in recognising that 100p = £1. They’ve practised counting in groups of 100 and used their knowledge of place value and number bonds to 100 to help with conversions. Physical and pictorial representations of money have supported their learning and helped them make these conversions more effectively.

Year 1 Maths- Estimating and Measuring the Mass of Objects

Today in their maths lesson, Year 1 were estimating and measuring the mass of objects using a balancing scale and cubes. They learnt that they should stop adding/counting cubes when the scale has balanced as this means that they have calculated the mass. They did really well with this and their estimates got better as the activity progressed as they could reason better e.g. I think this 3 glue sticks will weigh 60 cubes because they feel a lot heavier than the scissors which weighed 11 cubes.

Year 5 - Square Root Day

Today, Year 5 celebrated Square Root Day through an engaging LBQ (Learning by Questions) session, where pupils explored square roots, identified perfect squares, and practised estimating non-square roots. The activity helped deepen their understanding of inverse operations and built their confidence with this important mathematical concept.

Square Root Day in Year 4

Square Root Day Today we took part in Square Root Day. Square Root Day is when both the day of the month and the month are the square root of the last two digits of the year. It's a milestone for lovers of numbers, logic, and patterns because 2025 is a perfect square year! Represented as 45245^2452 (since 45×45=202545 \times 45 = 202545×45=2025), this rare occurrence makes the year a special point of reflection and celebration for mathematics fans. The children took part in interactive games with Lottie and Nora then did some quick fire questions on square roots. We noticed that there is a pattern with the square numbers which read odd than an even, odd, even. So we can check if when we are multiplying numbers we have the correct answer. Patterns help us to predict what comes next. Following this the hosts did a Q and A and St Barnabas got a live question shout out and asked “ What inspired them to be a mathematician?” Another question asked by another school was “ Who invented the square root?” which turned out to be a school in Ancient Greece. The children loved sharing the session with other schools across the country and did so brilliantly!

Year 6 Maths

In maths, year 6 have been learning how to convert fractions into percentages using our multiplication and division knowledge. At first, the children thought this topic sounded tricky, but all the class have now become converting experts!

Year 3- Maths- Celebrating Square Root Day with Nira Chamberlain

Year 3 joined a live zoom session with Nira Chamberlain to celebrate square root numbers today. They enthusiastically participated in activities around calculating square numbers, showcasing fantastic engagement and a real passion for learning. They even discovered why the unique alignment that creates Square Root Day, like the upcoming May 5th, 2025, only happens a few times in a lifetime! This special day reminds us to recognise and celebrate those rare and interesting moments. A huge well done to Year 3 for their brilliant effort and enthusiastic participation. A big shoutout to Lyla who was chosen by Nira Chamberlain read out a question. ‘Who inspired you to be a mathematician . Nira told us his parents were the inspiration behind his love for maths.

Year 1 Maths- Measuring using Non-Standard Units of Measurement

Today in Maths, Year 1 measured the length of various objects using non-standard units of measurement. To do this, they used counters, cubes and paper-clips. Year 1 were extremely accurate in their measurements as they made sure that they started at the very beginning of the object and lined up the counters, cubes and paper-clips accurately without leaving any gaps until they got to the very end of the object.

Year 6 Square Root Day

This week, year 6 took part in an online Zoom session for Square Root Day, an unofficial holiday celebrated on days when both the day of the month and the month are the square root of the last two digits of the year. For example, the last Square Root Day was April 4, 2016 (4/4/16), and the next Square Root Day will be May 5, 2025 (5/5/25). There was a guest speaker who was a real mathematician and the children took part in discussions, submitting questions to the speakers and playing some maths games. One great quote we took away from this session was: “Mathematics is the poetry of logical thinking.”

Year 2- Maths-Measuring Mass

Year 2 applied their calculation skills to mass problems using scales and real-life contexts today. Some children used base ten blocks to support their thinking, while others shared their methods at the front of the class, helping everyone explore different ways to solve problems.
