Year 1- Exploring 2D Shapes
This week in Year 1, we have had great fun naming, identifying and making 2D shapes. We have explored circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, pentagons and hexagons. We even took our learning one step further and were able to identify the 2D shapes that form the faces of 3D shapes. We know that cubes have square faces, cuboids have rectangular faces and can also have square faces, cylinders and cones have circular faces, triangular prisms have triangular and rectangular faces and square based pyramids have a square face and triangular faces. Well done Year 1- super maths!
Year 1 Maths- Exploring 3D Shapes
Year 1 have really enjoyed learning about 3D shapes in maths. They have been learning to identify 3D shapes by name and sort them into groups. They have focused on recognising cubes, cuboids, square-based pyramids, triangular-based pyramids, cones, spheres, cylinders and various prisms such as a triangular prism. They have also worked exceptionally hard to sort them in different ways. For example, we have had children sorting them into can and cannot roll, does have a circular face and doesn’t have a circular face, does have 6 sides and doesn’t have 6 sides, prisms and not prisms and so on… Well done Year 1! You’ve really impressed us with how quickly you've learnt the names of various 3D shapes and been able to recognise their features.
Reception - Christmas Challenges
Reception have enjoyed completing a range of Christmas challenges this week during their choosing time. They have been using strips of paper in the creative area to make Christmas tree pictures, ordering the gingerbread men from smallest to biggest, following instructions to draw a snowman and developing their fine motor painting skills.
Whole School- Design Technolgy
This half term, our students have been busy creating a range of designs in Design Technology. From Reception's wooden Christmas decorations to Year 6's electronic steady hand games, our children have showcased their imaginative and creativity skills. Year 1 brought their imaginations to life, creating interactive moving storybooks using slider mechanisms. Year 2 developed their sewing skills, designing and creating a range of Christmas puppets. Year 3 designed and made festive pouches, perfect for holding small gifts or treats. Year 4 stitched up Christmas stockings, ready to hang by the chimney, finally, Year 5 created festive cushions. These creations were showcased and sold at our Christmas Fayre. We're incredibly proud of the hard work and imagination our students have demonstrated in these festive DT projects.
Year 3- Maths- Making arrays using counters
This week in Maths, Year 3 mathematicians have been deepening their understanding of arrays by working with counters. They’ve practiced arranging counters into rows and columns, exploring a variety of combinations. Using concrete materials has made their learning both engaging and enjoyable, helping to reinforce key concepts effectively.
Reception Maths - Composition
Reception watched an episode of Numberblocks where the different numbers used different shapes to make patterns. We have been thinking about parts that make up numbers, so we had a go at making our own numberblock shape patterns and discussed the parts we could see.
Year 4 - Maths: Three Times Tables
Teamwork was key in our maths session today. In celebration of No Pens Day, our maths included a combination of singing, matching, playing online games and puzzle solving. We learned the three times tables and used this knowledge to create fact families. Our extension activity today was to complete a three times table Tarsia. It proved to be more difficult than they first thought, but it certainly challenged them.
Year 3- NO PENS DAY - Litter picking- Brainbox games-What can you remember in just 10 seconds?
Today, Year 3 celebrated No Pens Day thanks to our Smart School Council. They combined learning by litter picking, demonstrating teamwork, communication, and a strong sense of kindness and spirituality. They even discussed how God and the community would be pleased with their efforts. In the classroom, they paired up for a fun game of BrainBox, boosting their memory, observation skills, and understanding of math and reading. Oracy skills were embedded throughout the day, as students listened attentively, took turns to talk, and engaged in thoughtful discussions.
Year 1 Maths- Finding a Part
In maths, we have been focusing on finding a part. To do this, we had to look at the part we were given and then work out how many more we needed to count on in order to make the whole. We also figured out that we could do this by finding the difference between the whole and the part that we were given.
Reception- Maths-More and Fewer
In maths we were using the pan balance to compare more and fewer. We had a discussion about what ‘fewer’ could mean. Beau said “it means less” and Marnie-May said “it means there aren’t as much”. We put an uneven amount of cubes in each side of the pan balance and watched what happened. The children observed that the side with fewer cubes ‘went up’ and the side with more cubes ‘went down’.
Year 2- Maths- Adding across a 10
Our focus this week in maths, was adding across a 10. This can be tricky as it requires an exchange from ones to tens. We have used base 10 to help us work out the answers. As we have practiced more and more, we are becoming much more confident and becoming much more familiar with the steps of the additions.
Year 1 Maths- Addition Sentences
This week in maths, Year 1 have been focusing on creating and writing addition sentences within 10. Today, they used their ten frames to make numbers in various ways e.g. making 6 using 6 + 0 and 0 + 6, 5 + 1 and 1 + 5 and so on. They did a tremendous job. Well done Year 1.
