Year 3/4 Sportshall Athletics Winners
Mrs Gardner and I are immensely proud (and a little bit hoarse from all of the shouting) of our Year 3/4 Sportshall Athletics squad who came 1st tonight. They demonstrated brilliant behaviour, super sportsmanship and were excellent encouragers! A huge thank you to Mrs Gardner for giving up her time to train the squad after school. Parents and carers, thank you for your support with transport and allowing your child to participate in the club. All of the action photos can be found here: https://www.stbarnabasdarwen.co.uk/.../year-3-4... Well done you little superstars, Mrs Ham
Year 4 - P.E. Teamwork
On Tuesdays this half term, the Year 4s will be developing orienteering skills. This week was all about teamwork and trust. We played some games that required each group to work as a team in order to achieve a common goal. The hoop challenges involved passing the hoop round the circle without letting go of hands. The bench challenges involved the children swapping places with each other without stepping off the bench. All challenges required a clear plan, trust and support. The children were definitely demonstrating these qualities by the end of the lesson.
Reception: Muddy Monday
What a beautiful afternoon it was for our Reception class. The children enjoyed splashing in muddy puddles and loved the sunshine on their faces. The children are working hard to improve their walking stamina, we are slowly getting there and it is lovely to see how much progress they are making. The children enjoyed climbing today over the stile to get to the field. Some of the children were a little worried to do it but showed great perseverance and determination, well done!
Sportshall Athletics in Year 4
In our PE session today we did Sportshall athletics. We practised our baton exchange in relays and incorporated speed bounce, hurdles and tunnels. The children worked hard to develop their speed, focusing on form and technique. We are excited for the Year 3/4 Sportshall Athletics competition on Wednesday 26th March on the first week back after the half term holidays.
Inter - House Bench Ball in Year 4
This morning we took part in the inter- house bench ball which was led by our super sports leaders. The children were playing with their house team; River Darwen, India Mill, Whitehall Park and Darwen Tower. It was fantastic to see everyone joining in and being amazing St Barnabas encouragers. What a super way to end the half term and huge thanks to the sports leaders for organising this opportunity.
Inter- House Bench Ball
What a great Inter- House Bench Ball event we have had today. From Reception to Year 6 every child in school took part. The Sports Leaders led the event and managed each class really well . All of the children engaged with the year group sessions and were really enthusiastic, encouraging each other and working hard to develop their skills. Well done to everyone and a special thanks to The Sports Leaders. Another great event that involved every single child in school!
Year 1 PE- Inter-House Bench Ball
This afternoon, Year 1 took part in the inter- house bench ball which was led by our super sports leaders. The children thoroughly enjoyed playing with their house team and it was fantastic to see everyone joining in and being amazing St Barnabas encouragers.
Reception final Street dance session
Reception have had their final street dance lesson with Miss Jess today and showed off just how much they’ve learned in 6 weeks! They went on a space adventure and thought about how they could create fast, slow, soft and sharp movements. Then they performed their full dance sequence for the last time and were amazing. What super stars and thank you to Miss Jess for teaching us so much!
Year 1 PE- Street Dance
Year 1 enjoyed their sixth and final dance lesson with Miss Jess today. To start off the session, they put their space suit, boots and helmet and stepped into their rocket ship before embarking on an exciting space adventure. Year 1 then practised and performed the full dance sequence that they have been working on for the last 6 weeks for the very last time. They were incredible and it’s amazing to see the progress that the children have made from their very first dance session. They were able to link various movements and ways of travelling to perform a sequence with control. Well done Year 1!
Year 1 PE- Underarm throwing
Mrs Ham had the pleasure of teaching PE in Year 1 this week and she was really impressed with the underarm throwing skills that the children have developed over the last few weeks with Miss Flynn. We started with a fun Mr Men warm up to get our body ready and Mr Tickle was definitely the favourite one! We then recapped and practised the skills of underarm throwing with accuracy with a partner. We then applied these skills in a small game where one child was an attacker who had to throw the beanbag into a hoop and one was a defender. We thought about the tactics we could use such as looking or moving the opposite way to where we intended throwing the bean bag. We then put all these skills into practice with a couple of games of dodgeball and we saw some brilliant underarm throwing and tactics being used. Well done Year 1, I’m sure you will be amazing at our inter house benchball competition on Friday!
Year 5 - Dance
Year 5 continued their dance unit, exploring how movement can represent the unique characteristics of planets in our solar system. Using a variety of dance techniques—including levels, direction, speed and formation—they worked collaboratively to bring each planet to life. From the slow, heavy movements of gas giants to the sharp, quick steps reflecting rocky terrains, the children used creativity and expression to showcase their understanding of space through dance.
Year 4- Athletics in the Sun
In our PE lesson today we focused on Sportshall Athletics activities with a twist as we did it outside. We practised baton exchange in relays, soft javelin and ball push. The children loved working in teams and pushed themselves hard to achieve their very best. We finished off the session with a mixed relay and next lesson we aim to incorporate equipment from both the obstacle and over and under relays.
