Year 4 DT - Electric Torches

Today was our final DT session where we evaluated the torches that we made last week. We looked at all of the components of our torches such as the housing, reflector and switches. Many of us said that we would like more time to decorate our torches and next time, upon reflection, we would use a switch rather than make one from split pins and paper clip for safety reasons. The children have really worked hard on their designs and have come so far since week one when we struggled to make a simple circuit! Very impressive samples too- well done Year 4!

Year 3-Food and Nutrition- Making a Seasonal Tart

This term in D.T. Year 3 have been exploring food worldwide, recognising that food grows in different climates and identifying locally grown foods in the UK. At the start of the unit, the children made Japanese skewers, additionally, we were lucky to have a professional baker join us to create a delicious fruit crumble.  For our final lesson, the future bakers/chefs had a hands-on experience creating a seasonal tart using some of our key ingredients: mushrooms, rocket, kale, cheese, and tomatoes. Next week,  the children will evaluate their dishes, provide feedback and identify strengths.

Year 4 DT - Designing a product to fit a set of specific user needs

In our third DT session we have been looking at how we can design a product (torch) to fit a set of specific user needs. We looked at how to factor in who our product is for and how our design must follow a success criteria. The children designed some amazing torches with lots of thought and effort. We can’t wait to start making them next week.

This week the children worked together to make playdough. They decided to colour the playdough purple and used a variety of different coloured glitters. The children decided on an orange scent for their playdough. They enjoyed playing with it after and made tacos, wraps, houses, pizzas and lots of other creative objects!

Year 4 English - Non-Fiction - Explanation Texts

Today we started our new English unit with a focus on Non- Fiction -Explanation texts. We identified the key features within two texts looking at subordinating conjunctions. This unit links well to both of our science and DT units as we can work towards writing an explanation text on how a circuit works.

Year 3- Food Technology- Bake with Jessica Sharp

Year 3 had the best time meeting Jessica this afternoon. Jessica is a professional baker/ chef who runs a bakery business from home. She shared her passion for baking, inspired by her grandmother. The children made a scrumptious fruit crumble, from chopping apples, weighing flour, to layering the pastry and creating the crumble topping. They also had the opportunity to look at pictures of some of the wonderful cakes Jessica has made over the years.

Year 4 DT - Electrical Systems

In our first DT session this half term, we have started to explore electrical systems. This week we focused on what electricity is and where it comes from. We then moved onto making simple circuits with a bulb , batteries and a switch using split pins and a paper clip. Some groups were really tested as they needed to exchange their components a few times but we all got there in the end.

Year 3- English-Use questions to open a story.

Before starting their new writing unit, Year 3 were given a fun challenge. Working together in groups, they were tasked with using their imagination to construct something from the objects available to them, such as elastic bands, wood, hoops, sticks and canvas. The children were guided through a series of questions to help them brainstorm ideas for their story's opening paragraph. They were encouraged to imagine their creation as something enormous, suddenly appearing in an unexpected location of their choosing and for example, envisioning an immense car stranded on a remote beach or a colossal metal house situated on a zebra crossing in the heart of London.

Year 1-Making a Breakfast Pot

Year 1 made their breakfast pots (yogurts, cereals and fruits layered in a pot) for a friend this afternoon after spending a couple of afternoons this week learning how to cut fruits safely, taste testing a variety of fruits, cereals and yogurts and planning and designing a pot for a friend. They did a wonderful job and made sure that they only used ingredients that their friend liked. Well done Year 1!

Year 4 - Science: Creating Potter Bots

We began our new science unit this week with a hands on lesson. To kick off our learning about electricity we created our own potter bots. These were little robots containing a motor and batteries, and had felt tip pens for legs. The idea was to create a potter bot that would use a pivot arm to push it across a page and draw a picture. The class had great fun working in pairs to create and test their bots with fantastic results.

Reception: Imagine That Educational Visit

Wow, what a fantastic day our Ducklings had today. We visited Imagine That in Liverpool and had lots of fun! The children did lots of experiments with dry ice, made magical snow and made slime too. They used their imaginations in the roleplay area, painted a car, explored the creative area and made their own magnets. They were well behaved and represented the school beautifully!

Year 1 Food Technology- Planning and Designing a Breakfast Pot

Today in Year 1, the children got into partners and had to plan and design a healthy breakfast pot for each other. To do this, each member of the class had to fill in a sheet containing lots of different fruits, yogurts and cereals to state whether they liked or disliked them and then handed this sheet to their partner. From this, the children could then plan and design a breakfast pot for a friend knowing that they were going to enjoy the ingredients.
