Year 4 - Class Worship: Jesus Helps People

Continuing the 100 years of Blackburn Diocese, our class worship this week focussed on how Jesus helped people and the importance of taking the time to listen. The children took part in a short quiz, learned about books, chapters and verses in the Bible, and they acted out the story of Martha. They learned about how Jesus taught people to avoid distracting themselves with unimportant tasks and take the time to listen to God’s word. The children then shared times when they have truly felt listened to and we added some examples to our second kindness kite.

Year 1 RE: Jesus Turns Water into Wine

In RE, we looked at another story which shows us that Jesus is special. It is about a time when Jesus attended a wedding, but they ran out of wine. He used special stone jars to turn water into wine. We discussed what a wedding is and showed pictures of our own experiences at weddings. We then created special celebration jars that we might use at a wedding.

Whole School Worship with Rev Ben

Our Whole School Celebration Worship was led by Rev Ben this morning. We looked at the Bible story which focused on Jesus calling His team to see what super powers he needed to help him. Christian’s believe that Jesus is the number one King of the Universe, but His team were pretty ordinary. Although the team continued to make mistakes, Jesus still loved and cared for them. This helps Christians to have courage to overcome fear. As always, we started with a challenge and needed seven volunteers who were good at acting. We were thinking about superheroes and the children had to mime a super power whilst the other children had to guess what it was. Callie, Mason, Matthew, Desmond, Sofia, Eleanor and Harry all did a treat job and it was very entertaining! We then discussed the Bible story and what sort of people Jesus chose and what difference it makes to know that God can still use people who don’t have super powers to help him.

Year 3 - R.E- The Calling of Levi

In R.E. today, we explored the story of The Calling of Levi (also known as Matthew) as told in the Gospels. We investigated the "before and after" moments of Levi’s life to understand the impact of Jesus’ teachings. We discovered that before meeting Jesus, Levi was focused on: Material Wealth: Working at the tax booth and collecting money. However, after Jesus said the words "Follow me," everything changed. Levi’s new priorities became: Purpose: Leaving his old life behind to become a disciple. We discussed why this change happened, concluding that Jesus offered Levi a sense of belonging. It was a lesson on how Jesus can completely change a person’s direction and values.

Whole School Worship with Rev Matt

Whole School Worship was led by Rev Matt this morning and it looked at the Bible story - John the Baptist. We started with the usual challenge that helped us think about being courageous in times of change. How easy do different people find change. Rev Matt gave instructions that the children had to follow. This included clapping, sticking our tongue out to make an ocean, using our hands to make a V shape and rubbing out tummy whilst we pat our heads. The children loved this challenge but found different ones more challenging ~ not everyone found the same challenge to be problematic and this shows how we are all different. Next Rev Matt shared the Bible story and he asked the children to say the word “Wow” every time the word “special” was used. The story of John told us that he lived simply in the desert, wearing camel hair and eating locusts and wild honey, growing close to God. John preached a message of repentance (saying sorry for wrongs) and baptized people in the Jordan River, telling them God's promised Messiah (Jesus) was coming. When Jesus came, John baptized Him, and the Holy Spirit came down like a dove, showing everyone Jesus was God's Son. Baptism is all about change and through the story and our discussions we learnt that even though Jesus doesn’t need Baptism he shows us the way anyway.

Year 3- R.E- Reflecting on Change

In our R.E. lesson this week, Year 3 have been exploring the concept of change through the eyes of three different experts: Godfrey the Theologian, Phil the Philosopher, and Sally the Human Social Scientist. By looking at change through these different lenses, the children were able to reflect on their own life experiences. They wrote about the changes they have faced, such as the excitement of moving house, the milestone of starting Key Stage 2, or the arrival of a new baby in the family.

Year 1 RE: The Stilling of the Storm

In RE this week, Year 1 learned about the Bible story The Stilling of the Storm and why this story shows that Jesus is special. The children listened carefully to the story and talked about what was happening when the storm became rough and the disciples felt frightened. We discussed how Jesus was able to calm the storm and why this is important. To show their understanding, the children took part in drama activities, using freeze frames to act out different parts of the story. They worked brilliantly together to show the storm, the frightened disciples and the moment when everything became calm again. We also made links to our own lives by talking about feelings, especially feeling scared. The children shared thoughtful ideas about what makes them feel scared and who helps them when they are frightened, such as family members, teachers and friends. Year 1 showed great engagement, teamwork and empathy during the lesson, and it was lovely to see them expressing their understanding through drama and discussion.

Reception- RE: Jonah and the Whale

During our RE lessons, we have been exploring the question, “Which stories did Jesus hear when he was a child?” This week, we focused on the story of Jonah and the Whale. While listening to the story, we discussed the word “sorry” and talked about how it can sometimes be difficult to say. The children shared with a partner a time when they had said sorry and explained why it was important. We then took turns to share some of these ideas together as a class.

Year 5 - RE

In RE, we studied the Sermon on the Mount and the Beatitudes from the Gospel of Matthew. The Beatitudes are blessings Jesus gave to explain the character expected from Christians and include: trusting God through humility, forgiving and showing mercy to others as well as bringing peace to the world. The children considered what these Beatitudes mean for Christians today and re-wrote them for a modern audience.

Whole School Worship led by Rev Matt

Today our Celebration Worship was led Rev Matt and it focused on trusting God. We started with a challenge which was “. How green you are”. we started by singing it as a song. We sang it both loudly and quietly. As part of our challenge we hid Bishop Flippers and a child had to find him. If the person got close to the hiding place Rev Matt asked the children to sing loudly and if they moved away from the hiding place the children were asked to sing quietly.. Jenson hid Bishop Flippers and Mrs Wilkinson had the tough job of trying to find him but she succeeded with the help of our singers. Our Bible story followed which was the story of The Boy in the Temple which involves Jesus going missing in the temple but this reminds us that we can lean on God just as Jesus did when things become scary. It was scary for Mary and Jesus.”Whoever goes to the Lord for safety….can say to him, “You are my defender and protector. You are my God in you I trust.” We finished by reflecting on what makes us scared and how we can help others when they are scared too.

Reception: Kindness Kites

As part of celebrating 100 years of Blackburn Diocese, our school are taking part in the kindness kites challenge. For the next few weeks, we are focusing on saying something kind. Reception staff have caught three children so far saying something kind to their friends. Well done to Coban, Theo and Poppy. We are sure we will be adding more bows to our kindness kite in the upcoming weeks.

Year 5 - RE

In RE, we continued exploring the role Jesus played in the Bible as a teacher. We examined the parable of the Widow’s Gift. This story told by Jesus celebrates the generosity of those who are genuine and give as much as they can to help others. It emphasises the Christian values of generosity, sacrifice and love in action over greed and selfishness. The children considered how important such values are in the modern world.
