Design Technology Products
Good afternoon parents and carers, our children have been working really hard on their design and technology skills over the last few weeks to create products that can bought at our Christmas Fair. They are available to purchase on parent pay for £2.00 each, which will help to cover some of the cost of the materials used. Reception: Wooden christmas decorations Year 1: Christmas moving books Year 2 : Christmas puppets Year 3: Christmas pouches Year 4: Christmas stockings Year 5: Christmas cushions Year 6: Christmas loop games
Year 2 - Christmas Puppets
Year 2 have been decorating our Christmas Puppets this week.
Year 4 DT - Seasonal Stocking Production
We are flying with our seasonal stockings in Year 4 now. The children have been working so hard to create these wonderful stockings and we are so proud of their perseverance and determination to master difficult skills such as embroidery and appliqué. We can’t wait to share the stockings with everyone at the Christmas Fayre.
Year 6 - Loop Games
Year 6 have been working incredibly hard on their DT projects in preparation for the Christmas Fair and their final creations are fantastic. This year, the children designed and made their own loop games, carefully planning and constructing the electrical circuits before testing and refining their designs. Each game has been beautifully decorated and enclosed within a Christmas globe, giving the classic steady-hand challenge a festive twist.
Seasonal Stockings Start in Year 4
In our DT session this week, we made a start on our felt stockings. After selecting which stitch we would use - either the running or overstitch, we selected which embellishment we would add first. We were able to use the templates to make it easier too. The child found it quite a challenge using the fabric scissors, especially when cutting out the smaller designs but they really persevered and we had some lovely designs by the end of the lesson which they were super proud of. Next week, we look forward to adding extra appliqué, embroidery and creating the other designs on the other side of our felt then eventually sewing them together.
Year 2 - DT - Sewing using a running stitch for our puppets
Year 2 have been using a running stitch to sew two pieces of fabric together when making our puppets. They will be available to purchase at our FOSB Christmas Fair when they are finished.
Craft Club
We have had a great term at Craft Club doing Christmas crafts! Week 1: We used lots of resources to produce Christmas cards for family and friends. Some children folded 2D nets to create 3D gift bags. Week 2: We made beaded Christmas tree decorations and keychains using excellent fine motor skills to thread and shape our designs. Week 3: Finally, today we decorated our very own Christmas stocking using fabric pens and patches. Some of the older children were trained on how to safely use a hot glue gun to apply their designs. Everyone has been fantastic and Becky is looking forward to returning in 2026! ✨
Year 4 DT - Stocking making skills
In our DT session this week, we have been exploring different ways to join fabric using sewing skills. We identified different sewing stitches, how to thread a needle and secure a knot and join two pieces of fabric together using a sewing stitch. We collected our resources which included a needle, thread, pins, a pair of scissors and an off cut of felt. We decided that both the running stitch and the overstitch were the easiest to master. The children really persevered with threading the needle and adding a knot, with some even managing to hide their knots by trapping them into the middle of the fabric. We can’t wait to make a start on our actual designs in the next session!
Year 6 - Steady Hand Game
Today, the children began designing their steady hand games with a festive Christmas theme. Using all the knowledge they have gained about electrical circuits, they then started to construct their own loop and buzzer games, applying their understanding of components, conductors and how to create a complete circuit.
Seasonal Stockings in Year 4 - Exploring and Analysing Products
In DT we have started our new unit on Seasonal Stockings. We looked at what we already know about stockings, what their function is and where the tradition of leaving stockings out at Christmas came from. Following this we shared a variety of Mrs Gardner’s Christmas stockings and had to guess whose was whose. We discussed both function and visual appeal of each of the examples. Finally we choose one of the stockings and answered questions relating directly to both the fiction and appeal then went on to start our very own designs in paper, choosing the colour of the two base felts in preparation.
Year 5 - Design and Technology
We started our big design and technology project this week. We are making Christmas cushions using a variety of planning and technical skills. The children cut out their felt Christmas designs and began sewing them onto their cushion covers. The children showed great skill and perseverance threading needles, tying knots and beginning their precise running stitches. In future lessons, we will develop the use of blanket stitches to sew the pocket.
Year 1 D&T- Remembrance Day
Today in Year 1, we applied our understanding of sliding mechanisms to create beautiful, remembrance-themed moving pictures. As we worked, we reflected on all the soldiers who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice their lives to protect our country. We also thought carefully about the symbolism of the poppy and what it represents. Well done, Year 1, for your thoughtful work and creativity.
