Small but mighty girls’ football team!

We are so proud of our girls’ football team for their brilliant performances and teamwork over the last four weeks, ending on an 11-0 win against Ashleigh. They came 4th overall out of 12 schools across Blackburn with Darwen. In their words, they might be small but they are mighty! Our team is made up of girls in Years 3, 4 and 5 this year so we are so proud of them for stepping up as it is the Years 5 & 6 league. We are sure they will improve year on year! A huge thank you to Mr Bloomfield for giving up his time to coach the team on Tuesdays and referee the matches. Thanks also to our parents for their support at the matches and helping to transport the girls.

Cross Country Trials

Today we held cross country trials for years 3-6. We had a super turn out and every single child that took part tried really hard and pushed themselves out of their comfort zones. The ground was wet which made it even harder but this didn’t deter our super stars. Well done to everyone and a big thanks to our Year 6 Marshalls and sports leaders.

Inter-House Dodgeball

Today we were all lucky enough to take part in our Inter-house sports event which was dodgeball, led by our wonderful sports leaders. Every class from Year 1 right up to Year 6 took part and it was fantastic to watch. We are so lucky to take part in our inter-school events and it was the sports leaders first go at leading every class in a warm up right through to house games. We can’t wait until the next one now when our Reception class can join us too.

Key Stage 1 Multi- Skills Festival at St Bedes

This morning, ten of our Year 2 children took part in the Key Stage 1 Multi- Skills Festival at St Bedes. We also had three of our wonderful Sports Leaders- Seb, Theo and Luca to support and guide the younger children. The children worked their way round the stations which included an over and under relay, aim game, cone stack high stepper and vortex throw. Our children had so much fun and represented our school fantastically well! They encouraged each other in true St Barnabas the Encourager style, listening carefully to instructions and trying their very best. We even came back to school with a gold medal!

Fundamentals in Year 1

In our Fundamentals Skills session today, we looked at a range of elements which included both side gallops and rolling a ball. We warmed up to music from the Jungle Book where the children moved around like big bears, scary black jaguars, mischievous monkeys and slithering snakes. Next we practiced our galloping, concentrating on moving in different ways with a lead leg and facing forwards. Following on from these we used the dodgeballs to develop our rolling of a ball. The children aimed to get the balls in the hoop, with many aiming and predicting as they went along. What a great first session we had in Year 1!

Year 2 Fundamental Skills

In Year 2 today we had a focused fundamentals skills session in which the children developed the skills of both galloping and rolling with aiming and predicting. The children first warmed up and then practised side galloping . We worked towards a moderate pace, vertical lift and with a rhythmical smooth action . Following this the children focused on rolling a ball. We used a target and the children looked at the key pints of bent legs, one handed through and release time. At the end of the session we had a Boccia style competition which the children loved.

Year 4 Gymnastics

Today we had a gymnastic taster session with Passion 4 Gymnastics. We started with a warm up using different ways of moving around the room. Next we moved onto stretches which included doing three small bounces in a crouched position then stretching up and touching our toes. The children moved into straddle, tuck and pike positions and continued their stretching to ensure that they were fully prepared for the session. In the next stage of the session, the children moved onto the six stations All of the stations involved some form of rolling and worked on developing core strength. The children really enjoyed taking part in today's session and we hope that we can get some of them to take part in an after school club and gym competition in the spring term.

Year 5 - Move and Learn Physical Activities

Brad from the Blackburn Rovers Community Team visited Year 5 to talk to the children about the importance of physical activity and a healthy diet. The children went into the hall and learned about staying healthy through physical activity. They played games such as dodgeball and rock-paper-scissor relay. All the children had fun participating during the day. Thank you Brad.
