Year 2 - P.E. - Striking and fielding
Year 2 have been improving their throwing and catching in P.E. We learned about how finding space is so important in sport and how we can use tactics to help us to score points.
Year 1 PE: Balancing
In our first specialist gymnastics session, we focused on balancing. We had different stations, which allowed us to balance different parts of our bodies, sometimes our legs or arms. This showed us the importance of balance as a gymnast.
Year 4 - PE: Introduction to Map-Reading
Year 4’s first session of orienteering was focussed on map reading and teamwork. The children were shown a range of equipment and were taught how to read a key. In their groups, the children had to use the keys on their maps to recreate a funny face using the equipment. The challenge was to ensure they communicated as a team as they were only allowed to collect one piece of equipment at a time.
Year 3- P.E- Showing Determination in Sport
Today in P.E. we focused on our Invasion Games unit by practising our handball skills and focusing on our character value of Determination. We began by modeling and practising how to send and receive a ball using both a one-handed pass and a bounce pass. To perform these successfully, we followed specific techniques. When receiving, we kept our eyes on the ball and held our hands in a "W" shape to safely bring the ball in. In groups of 4 or 5, we stood in a semi-circle and practiced "Pepper Pot". One child acted as the leader, passing to each classmate in turn, who then passed the ball back. We rotated roles so everyone had a chance to practice both one-handed and bounce passes.
BwD Schools Y3/4 Sportshall Athletics
What a fantastic evening we have had attending the Blackburn with Darwen Schools Year 3/4 Sportshall Athletics event at DVHS. Team B were on fire, securing lots of wins over the course of the night and managed to come away with a silver medal. Well done to all involved and a special thank you to our amazing parents for transporting the children to and from the event amd being the best cheerleaders at the end! A huge thank you to Mrs Gardner and Mr Bloomfield for their brilliant coaching and encouragement!
Year 3-The Big Winter Wander and Birdwatching,
Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic afternoon participating in The Big Winter Wander! While completing their sponsored walk for the WWF, the children also took part in the RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch. They did an amazing job identifying different species around the school grounds and recording their findings to help track our local bird populations. While on the route, the children also spoke to a member of the council about the location where they will be planting their very own tree this Thursday! It was a wonderful afternoon of nature-focused learning and preparation for our upcoming sustainability project. A huge well done to our wonderful Reception children, who showed incredible determination today taking part in the Big Winter Wander! Our little explorers braved the elements to complete an impressive 2.55km trek around Jack Keys, taking in the sights and sounds of the season while showing fantastic team spirit. We are so proud of how well they handled the distance and represented our school. In gymnastics, Year 5 worked in pairs to apply the rolls, jumps and balances they have been learning in order to make a coordinated routine. The children incorporated different forms of travel and body shapes (e.g. tuck and pike) into their routines. Next week, they will perform their routines and give feedback to and receive feedback from each other.
Year 2 PE - Gymnastics - Travelling, rolling and balancing
Year 2 have been building a sequence of movements involving travelling, rolling and balancing.
Year 3/4 BwD Primary Schools Key Step Gymnastics Competition
Today we had the pleasure of taking sixteen of our Year 4 children to represent the school at the Blackburn with Darwen Schools Key Step Gymnastics competition at S Bede’s. They took part in three routines ; floor exercise, body management and vault. It was a very long day but the children stayed focused and worked so hard to remember the three complex routines. We had a mixed team, two girls teams and a boys team. They all worked solidly within their squads showing perseverance and encouraging each other every step of the way. We can’t wait to hear the outcome in a couple of days when the results will be shared.
