Year 1 English- Constructing Sentences
This week in Year 1, the children have been constructing sentences to retell the events of the Great Fire of London. They have been many groups of words that they have had to form into sentences. To do this, they needed to think about starting the sentence with the subject (who?) and learnt that this could be the name of a person, place or a thing and follow this on with what the person, place or thing is doing (doing what?) to create effective sentences. For example, Thomas Farriner left a spark in the oven and Saint Paul's Cathedral burnt down. Once they had put the words into the correct order, they had to write these sentences into their books ensuring that they used capital letters for the proper nouns.
Year 1 English- Capital Letters
As part of their English lessons, Year 1 have been looking at when a capital letter is needed. They have built on their understanding that a capital letter is needed for the personal pronoun ‘I’ and at the start of the sentence by learning that the names of people, places, days of the week and months of the year are all proper nouns and need to be spelt with a capital letter too. We have been playing a game where we have had to sit down if the word that is called out doesn’t need a capital letter and stand up if it does. We have also completed some work in our books where we have had to identify proper nouns and write them with a capital letter. We have tried hard to use an upper case alphabet line to ensure that we’ve been forming capital letters correctly. Well done Year 1.
Year 4 - English: Publishing
The children finished their Roman soldier diaries on Monday, and this week, we have been typing them up using the Chromebooks. There are a number of skills involved in this process. It really forces the children to think about their punctuation, word choices, and spelling.
Year 1 Phonics
In Year 1 this afternoon, we learnt the ‘i’ for child. We read lots of words with the ‘i’ for child in them such as behind, mind, kind, rind, find, wild and mild and matched them up to to the picture that showed the word. Some of us also did the ‘ear’ for hear and the ‘oi’ for coin. This reading activity worked perfectly on ‘No Pens Day’.
Year 3- NO PENS DAY - Litter picking- Brainbox games-What can you remember in just 10 seconds?
Today, Year 3 celebrated No Pens Day thanks to our Smart School Council. They combined learning by litter picking, demonstrating teamwork, communication, and a strong sense of kindness and spirituality. They even discussed how God and the community would be pleased with their efforts. In the classroom, they paired up for a fun game of BrainBox, boosting their memory, observation skills, and understanding of math and reading. Oracy skills were embedded throughout the day, as students listened attentively, took turns to talk, and engaged in thoughtful discussions.
Reception- Stickman
In class we read the story ‘Stickman’. As part of our muddy Monday we went to Jacks Key and collected some sticks to make our very own stick person. The children wrapped pipecleaners around their stick to create arms and legs. We then glued on eyes and hair to create their stick man or lady.

Our Reception children braved the cold today and went in search of twigs and sticks to create our own Stick Men at Jack Keys. We will be focussing on this story throughout this week and we will be making our own Stick Men to help us retell the story.
Year 3 - English- Discovering Bear Island
Today, Year 3 worked in pairs to explore the book "The Last Bear." They made predictions and inferences about the story based on the front cover of the book. Next, they looked at the double-page illustration (map) of Bear Island. The children debated whether it was a real place and explored the map, identifying locations like Tromso and Svalbard. We used Google to research the island and discovered that it is a small, uninhabited island in the Arctic Ocean. The children were fascinated to learn that there is a Bear Island in Norway, not far from the UK.
Year 1 English- Story Planning
In English, Year 1 have been story planning. They have been innovating a scene from the Gruffalo which can be added into the original story. They have worked hard with their rhyming and came up with some brilliant ideas. We have had bears running away because the mouse has said that he is meeting the Gruffalo by the lair and his favourite food is chopped up bear, we have had the same but with the mouse meeting the Gruffalo by a trunk with his favourite food being fried skunk and so on.. Well done Year 1!
Year 3- Guided Reading-A Poppy is to Remember
For our guided reading session today, Year 3 listened to a story "A Poppy is to Remember" by Heather Patterson and Ron Lightburn. This story helped the children understand the significance of Remembrance Day and the symbolism of the poppy. We reflected on the sacrifices made by soldiers for peace, listening to John McCrae's poem, In Flanders Fields.
Reception: Birthdays
As part of our celebrations topic, we are focussing on birthdays this week. The children have enjoyed making birthday cards, birthday cakes, bracelets and birthday crowns too. They have been focussing on their fine motor skills to complete their challenges and also have been working really hard when writing their names. Well done!
Reception RE: The Birth Of Jesus
Today our Reception children began their Christmas unit in RE. We took part in a sensory story all about the birth of Jesus. We used Widget symbols for each part and used our senses to get involved with the story. The children smelt baby oil to understand that Mary was expecting a baby, we walked to show how Mary and Joseph travelled to Bethlehem and we lit candles to show how dark it was. The children then used a drum to knock on the door to see if there was any room. We then used the sign for no. Finally, the children wrapped a baby in blankets to show the birth of Jesus. The children really enjoyed drawing parts of the story in our scrap book and enjoyed getting involved in the story all about the birth of Jesus. We can't wait for the children to act out this special story in their Nativity production in a few weeks time.
