Year 1 History: Teddy Bears Picnic
Year 1 brought their favourite teddy bears from home to join our teddy bears picnic today. We went around in a circle and shared our teddies names and why we love them. Then, we played some fun games with our teddy bears such as teddy bear musical statues, ‘What Time Is It Mr Bear?’ and we even had a teddy bear parade, before enjoying a yummy biscuit. Once we were back in the classroom, we looked at how teddy bears have developed over time, starting with 1920’s as this is over a hundred years ago. We then compared our modern day teddies to teddies of the past, identifying a similarity and difference between them.
Year 1 RE: Easter Story
Today, Year 1 retold the events of the Easter story through freeze frame drama. We told the story of Palm Sunday, Last Supper, Jesus is arrested, Good Friday, the tomb and the Resurrection. We discussed why the Easter story is important to Christians and how this links to new beginnings. The children had to choose one part of the story that they thought was the most important and why.
Year 1 PE: Handstands and Cartwheels
In our PE session today, we learnt some safe techniques for handstands and cartwheels. These techniques will helping us develop our handstands and cartwheels later. We showed good balance skills and careful partner work.

Our Whole School Worship-Palm Sunday and Serving Others
Our whole school worship began with signing the Trinity, bringing the whole school together in reflection. To explore the theme of our new Kindness Kite, Jack (Y5), Eliza (Y5), and Olivia (Y4) shared the Fairness Kite, which explained the biblical perspective on justice and treating others equitably. Mrs Ham asked the children to take a moment to reflect on everything we have done as a school to serve others who don't have as much as us. We looked back on our collective efforts to help those in need: Donating clothes, coats for the homeless, and teddies, which were organised by Year 5 Rotakids. Collecting food for Harvest and supporting the Darwen Enterprise Easter Egg appeal. Filling shoe boxes and raising money through sponsored walks. Worship continued with Mrs Ham reading a rhyming Palm Sunday Bible story about Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey, which the children and staff acted out brilliantly. Jesus and his friends were played by Charlie G, Peyton, and Mr Bloomfield. Zac (Year 1) played the donkey that carried Jesus into the city. Iris, Ava, and many other children acted as the crowd, waving palm leaves to welcome the King. Mrs Araujo and Mr Mealor played the Pharisees, representing the religious leaders who disagreed with Jesus and watched the parade with concern. To end our worship, we sang, 'We Have a King Who Rides a Donkey.' We left worship thinking about the example Jesus set and how we can continue to give in service to those around us.
Year 1 PE: Rolling A Ball
In PE, Year 1 have been practising rolling a ball. We worked in groups of 3 and started by rolling a dodgeball to our partner, through another child’s legs. Then, the person in the middle had to jump over the moving ball. We also added a hoop so that the ball had to roll through the hoop. To make it more challenging, we swapped from a dodgeball to a tennis ball. This was tricker as they are a smaller and bouncy.
Year 1 Provision: Creating Castles
Last week, Year 1 loved creating castles using toilet rolls in provision. We saw them use lots of different skills and imagination, such as adding flags, turrets and backgrounds.
Year 1 British Science Week
For British Science Week, we focused on the word ‘curiosity’. We discussed how all scientists have to be curious to find anything out. Then, we looked at the curiosity quiz, which asked questions such as “Will plants grow faster if you speak kindly to them?”. Year 1 also came up with some big questions themselves. Our class question was “What happens to crayons when they get warm?”. Year 1 worked in groups of 4 to draw simple pictures and put crushed crayons on the. Using a hair dryer, we melted the crayons to see that they become like paint and can be spread.
Year 1 Music: Playing Ukuleles
In Music, Year 1 were practising playing ukuleles. They learnt how to tune the strings and take care of the instrument. They also played a simple beat to music.
Year 1 PE: Rolling
Year 1 practised rolling. They recapped the egg roll, pencil roll and rock and roll. They also learnt the straddle roll. They enjoyed balancing equipment whilst rolling, as well as rolling on equipment. They demonstrated great teamwork and encouragement.
Year 1 DT: Food Tasting
Today, we tried lots of different fruits, yoghurts and cereals. These will be potential ingredients in our healthy breakfast pots. To help us plan a good breakfast pot, we rated the different foods and described them with adjectives such as sweet, sour, rancid, juicy, crunchy and smooth. Next week, we will plan a breakfast pot for our partner based on their likes/dislikes.
Whole School Worship - Sharing What We Have
Our kindness kite focus for this week, ‘Shared what they had’, linked perfectly with today’s story, the Feeding of the 5000. Before sharing the story, Mrs Ham asked children to about times they have shared with others. These included smiles, toy and clothing donations and even car sharing. After watching the story, the children reflected on the benefits of sharing and how God provides for his people in abundance, just like how the small amount of food multiplied upon Jesus’s faithful request to God. In reflection, we considered what we could share with others throughout Lent and made pledges to do so. We brought our worship to a close by sharing our wonderful singing voices with one another, practising some Easter songs for our upcoming service.
Year 1 History: Toy Detectives
Year 1 became toy detectives in History today. The examined a range of toys and used clues such as the material and quality to help decide if it was old or modern. They compared similarities and differences of old and modern toys and loved playing with the toys too.
