Farm school
Farm school welcomed into school a 2 day old baby goat this week. All children had the chance to choose a name for him which was selected from a bucket. The winner was ‘pebbles’ chosen by Seb. Farm school children also painted their chicks and carrots, planted peas and made art work for Farmer Georgie to take and put up on her farm. At the end of the class each child was presented with a certificate, we have all had so much fun, the children have been brilliant with all of the animals and shown kindness and respect throughout. Well done Farm School!!

Year 1- Making our Breakfast Pots.
This afternoon, Year 1 got to work on making their breakfast pots for their friend. First they had to follow some important hygiene routines such as rolling up their sleeves or taking their jumpers and cardigans off, tying back longer hair, taking off any watches, putting their aprons on and washing their hands. Using their design sheets from the previous lesson, they then got to work preparing their ingredients safely and hygienically. This involved using the bridge and fork secure cutting techniques that they had previously learnt and layering up the various parts of their pots (yogurt, cereal and fruit). Finally, they gave them to their friend to enjoy.
Year 1- Exploring Information Books
Year 1 have been reading information books, finding the answers to questions in information books and exploring the features of information books. They looked for the headings, captions, fact boxes, index, glossary and contents page. They are now working on their own information books to showcase their knowledge and understanding of the Victorians.
Year 1 Phonics
In the phonics area, some of the children have been independently practising the reading of words with the ai, ay, a-e and ey graphemes as this is what they’ve been learning in their phonics sessions.
Year 1- Food Tasting and Planning and Designing our Breakfast Pots.
As our D&T unit for this half-term, Year 1 are working towards making a breakfast pot for a friend. Today, they food tasted some ingredients such as grapefruit, redcurrants, blackcurrants, pineapple, apricots, peaches, shreddies, special flakes and weetabix. The children then had to create a checklist of the ingredients that their partner did and didn’t like to inform the planning and designing of the breakfast pot they were making for them. As well as this, they had to include at least 3 of our 5 a day to ensure that it was healthy. Year 1 can’t wait to get making them next lesson.
Palm Sunday Worship
Today we learnt about Palm Sunday. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, he didn’t arrive in a fancy carriage but on a little donkey. People waved palm branches and were so pleased to see him. Many people gave him a warm welcome but some people were not impressed and were filled with feelings of jealousy. Mason said they could be feeling cross and Leonora said they could be angry. We helped Mrs Ham retell the story of Palm Sunday. Mrs Ham showed everybody a palm shaped as a cross. The crowd shouted Hosanna to welcome Jesus. Later in the week, leaders who were angry turned people against Jesus and he was crucified. This was all in God’s plan and on Easter Sunday, Jesus rose from the dead. In times of sadness, we can all be kind to cheer everybody up. Our Wow group led our singing and we sang ‘ We have a king who rides a donkey’.
Farm School
Farm School were visited by farmer Georgie’s farm dog ‘Betty’. The children learnt all about the jobs Betty does to help out on the farm, this included, herding chickens and ducks and helping to find lost sheep. The farm school class also planted ‘golf ball carrots’ and even coloured in some carrot pictures too.
Year 1 Maths- Measuring using a ruler
As part of their maths unit on measuring length and height, Year 1 were introduced to measuring with a ruler today. The concentration as they measured various lines of different lengths was amazing. They were very accurate with their measuring, always making sure they had the beginning of their line starting at 0cm. Well done Year 1.
Celebration Worship- Living life in all its fullness
It was wonderful to hear from all of our class teachers this morning how their class has been 'achieving great things' and 'living life in all its fullness' this week. We have had several visitors in school this week including an author, two dentists, a radiographer and the Dog's Trust and we were so proud to hear how the children welcomed them into school and showed them kindness. We also reflected on how we can show the special ladies in our lives how much we love them and say a big thank you for everything they do for us. Wishing all of our mummies and grandmas a lovely Mother's Day on Sunday. What another fantastic week at St Barnabas! Year 1 D&T- using the fork secure technique and the bridge hold technique to cut fruit.
As part of their D&T unit, Year 1 learnt some new techniques for cutting fruit today. They learnt how to cut strawberries using the bridge hold technique and how to cut pear slices using the fork secure technique. They listened really well and performed the two techniques very carefully. They can’t wait to apply their skills next week as they prepare and make their breakfast pot of fruit and yogurt. Well done Year 1.
