Year 1- Instructions

Over the last few days, Year 1 have been following, reading and looking at the features of instruction texts. We have looked at time conjunctions, imperative verbs and adverbs. On Thursday, we will start to construct and write our own set of instructions. We will be creating our own obstacle courses and constructing a sequence of steps for them.

Year 1 Class Worship

Following on from Mrs Ham’s whole school worship on Monday, Year 1 learnt some more information about WWII and how the Jews were mistreated. We learnt that the Jews had little freedom and were banned from doing certain jobs, from having pets, from going to parks and restaurants, from schools and from riding a bike amongst lots of other things. We reflected on how this must have made them feel. We also read a book about Anne Frank and the children were shocked to find out that she and her family along with many other Jewish families had to stay in hiding for a long time in fear. We then sang a song about peace and thought about how we can help to make a kind and peaceful world. We talked about sharing our beautiful smiles, helping each other, greeting each other kindly and sharing with each other regardless of people’s race or religion. We finished with some beautiful prayers for those who lost their lives and were mistreated in WWII and praying for a more peaceful and kinder world. Well done Year 1.

Parent Governor Vacancy

Dear Parents and Carers, just a quick reminder that we have an upcoming parent governor vacancy. The governors play a vital role in supporting and shaping our school and it is a great way to become more involved in the life of our school. Parent governors hold the unique position of having a parental viewpoint of the school. Through their children, they have a first hand experience of the delivery of the curriculum and how the school is perceived from the 'consumers' point of view. If you are interested in joining our local governing committee then please see the attached letter from our Chair of Governors, Jen Frankish. For further information please see our school website: https://www.stbarnabasdarwen.co.uk/key-information/governance For an application form please contact our school office at [email protected] or 01254 702996. The deadline for applications is this Friday 28th January 2022. We look forward to welcoming a new parent to our friendly and supportive local governing committee, to help make St Barnabas the best school it can be. Yours Sincerely, Mrs Ham

Year 1 Class Worship- Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks

Following on from Mrs Ham’s whole school worship earlier this week on Martin Luther King, Year 1 did some further learning and reflecting in their class worship time. We learnt about how black people were treated differently because they weren’t allowed to use the same toilets, same restaurants or go to the same schools as white people. We learnt about how black people had to sit at the back of the bus and give up their seats for white people. We thought about how this must have made the black people feel and we came up with the words heartbroken, sad, upset, angry and devastated. We also thought about how this would have made some of the white people feel having to leave the black people out as they didn’t have a choice and just had to do as they were told or they would be fined. We described Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks as amazing and brave people as they fought for the world to be a fairer place where black and white people could be friends and live in a more peaceful and kinder world. We thought about how this fairer world is a much better place to live. Well done Year 1 for super acting and reflection.

Year 1- working towards running 1K

Year 1 are working towards running 1K in their weekly run. 1K is 18 laps around the infant playground. We did 10 laps today which is 2 laps more than last week. However, some children opted to continue the run in their play time and got to the 1K mark. Next week, we are aiming for 11-12 laps and we will continue to keep building on the number of laps that we do.

Year 1 Science- Investigating Material Properties

Year 1 really enjoyed their science lesson this week. We explored the different properties of materials. We used the words: shiny, dull, rough, smooth, hard, soft, waterproof, absorbent, brittle, opaque and transparent. We then investigated different materials to see whether they could bounce, absorb water, bend, twist or be squashed. We also talked about how a sponge is useful for cleaning our cars because it’s soft so it won’t damage our cars and it can absorb soap and water to clean them. However, a rock wouldn’t be very good for cleaning a car because it is hard so it would scratch our car and it can’t absorb the water or soap that we need to clean our cars.

They listened and joined in amazingly well. Well done Year 1.
