Growing Our Future: A New Microforest at St Barnabas!
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our school community is taking part in creating a brand-new microforest with the help of Lancashire County Council's Treescapes team, working in partnership with Blackburn with Darwen Council! Located just off the path near our school leading up to Jacks Key, this green space will be a lasting legacy for our neighbourhood. We will also shortly be planting a community orchard near the MUGA on our school grounds for our school family to use. Every single child and staff member will have the opportunity to get their hands in the soil and plant at least one tree on Thursday 12th February so bringing in wellies would be brilliant please. This isn't just about gardening; it’s a hands-on lesson in: Biodiversity: Creating homes for local wildlife. Climate Action: Learning how trees act as the "lungs" of our planet. Stewardship: Understanding our personal responsibility to protect the Earth. We can’t wait to watch these saplings—and our children—grow together!
Pancake Day Celebration!
Since we are on half-term during Shrove Tuesday, Miss Kachwalla (Design & Technology Lead) has arranged a special visit from Fruitilicious professional bakers on Thursday, 12th February! Every class will have the chance to watch the professionals in action, learn about food preparation firsthand, and—of course—enjoy a delicious pancake. Safety & Allergies: Please be assured that all dietary requirements are covered. The bakers have already been provided with our school's allergy list and will cater for every child safely. We’re looking forward to a fantastic afternoon of professional baking and tasty treats!
Reception class Police Visit
Our "People Who Help Us" topic is getting a very exciting visitor! This week, we are thrilled to welcome a local Police Officer into our classroom. It’s going to be an action-packed session as we learn all about how they keep our community safe. Our budding recruits can look forward to: • Job Talk: Learning exactly what a police officer does every day. • The Uniform: A close-up look at the gear and gadgets they wear. • The Main Event: A special tour of a real police car (we’re crossing our fingers for the sirens!). We can’t wait to see the children’s faces and hear all their brilliant questions.
Reception class Firefighter Visit
Our "People Who Help Us" adventure continues with a visit from some real-life heroes! We are so excited to announce that a Firefighter will be dropping by to visit our class. It’s going to be a "glowing" experience for the children as they discover what it takes to protect our community. Here’s what we have planned: • Life as a Firefighter: Hearing stories about fire safety and the different types of rescues they perform. • The Kit: Checking out the heavy-duty helmet, boots, and special protective suit (it’s a lot heavier than it looks!). • The Big Red Truck: Getting an up-close look at the fire engine, the long hoses, and all the clever tools stored inside. Get ready for a day of sirens and smiles! We'll be sure to share plenty of "fire-tastic" photos of our visit.
Reception class visit to Imagine That
We are very excited to say that we have booked an educational trip for Reception class to visit Imagine That! In Liverpool. The children will be able to access a large role play area, an Art room, Science exploration room and a guided workshop. This will help the children with their imaginative skills, problem solving and a great way to explore each area of the Early Years curriculum. The date for the trip will be Wednesday 13th May and we are asking for a voluntary contribution of £18 per child to cover the cost of the transport and the venue. Please note that if we do not receive enough money to cover the cost of the trip, it may have to be cancelled. Children will need to wear their school uniform for the visit and a packed lunch will be provided for all of the children. Thank you, Mrs Wilkinson, Mrs Govan and Mrs Thompson
Reception class Dental Visit
Our "People Who Help Us" topic is taking a trip to the dentist! We are very excited to welcome a Dentist (and their trusty dental nurse) to our classroom this week to talk all about healthy smiles. It’s going to be a "brilliant" session focused on taking care of our teeth and making sure a trip to the dentist is never scary. Here is what the children will explore: • The Dentist’s Job: Learning how dentists check our teeth to keep them strong and shiny. • The "Tools of the Trade": Seeing the special mirrors, tiny brushes, and high-tech chairs they use (no scary drills here!). • Sparkling Teeth: A hands-on demonstration on the best way to brush and which foods make our teeth the happiest. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone’s pearly whites and learning how to keep them that way!

Author Visit for our EYFS Mother's Day Celebration
During the EYFS Mother's day celebration, Colette Lee who is an author will be joining Reception class to read her story 'What's that Mummy?' Colette has always had a passion for poetry and storytelling, writing recreationally for many years. Her picture book, What's That Mummy? was inspired by her young children who continue to inspire many of her ideas. Colette is based in Darwen, originally from Essex, where she works part-time for the NHS alongside raising her two young children.
